"I desire to present for your consideration the Story of Israel, noting in particular the periodicity of that story in its record of important epochs. In our deliberations we shall not only have occasion to consult history, but also prophecy...Thus it becomes apparent that, according to the promises of God, we, as the children of Christ, are indissolubly connected with the people of Israel; and if there be any patriotic impulses within our being, they should thrill as we meditate upon the achievements of that illustrious race." He discusses Israel's Beginning, Israel's Overthrow, The Overthrow Of The Church, The Data Fixing The Overthrow Of The Church, The Era Of The Restoration and The Time Of Effecting The Restoration.

Joseph Smith III states, "That, as the laws of God, found in the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and the later revelations to the church, were given to constitute the rules of both faith and practice, upon which the church was to be built and perpetuated, as a consequence, God would not give to the church through Joseph Smith any commandment or rule of faith and practice which would conflict with the laws he had already given; or that would require the performance of any act by which those laws would be disregarded or broken."

"Whatever may be the truth about the various theories of evolution it is a fact that we have reached the stage in our church endeavor, I suppose a stage which is always present with us, that without God we cannot build Zion, and without us he will not. In fact he cannot do so. If he is to have his way with us he has to be obedient to the law of our own being. He is made to serve with our sins, as Isaiah has said. And because he has created us as he has, he has imposed upon himself certain limitations, and these he struggles with. A man's consent to serve the Almighty may be engendered by the revelation of his love, but such consent may be and very often is indefinitely withheld and there's nothing God can do about it. He is helpless, utterly helpless. And in this regard he has delivered himself into our hands to do with as seemeth him good....The words of the New Testament have been sifted and resifted millions of times in an endeavor to gain some fresh angle of vision. And we must be grateful for the insights that come to us from these men. But let us not forget that God is his own interpreter. Let us not forget that only Christ himself can tell us who he is; only Christ himself can tell us who we are and only Christ himself can tell us what he would have us do and it is by and through and of the power of the Holy Spirit."

Brother Lewis states, "Preaching from notes is a custom very extensively practiced in the religious world. Some have their entire sermons written or in a printed form, which have been carefully prepared and revised from time to time. Almost invariably the minister, before presenting his sermon to the audience, asks the Lord to give him of his Spirit that he may present such thoughts as will be food for the assembly. In my judgment there is no consistency in asking the Lord to bring to his (the minister's) mind that which shall be food for the congregation, when he has before him all that he intends to present."

Hanson given at the RLDS World Conference, April 9, 1956 at the Stone Church, Independence, Missouri, at 7:30 p.m. Brother Hanson states, "The Church that we have the honor to represent is very fortunate in having three volumes wonderfully inspired of God; The Bible, The Book of Mormon and the Book of Doctrine and Covenants. The Bible is a treasury of religious truths. It teaches how to live nobly and to die with the bright hope of the hereafter. It leads to revolt against tyranny and proclaims liberty. It teaches the Fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man and in the new testament do we find writings by four different distinguished ministers of the Church established by Christ giving a record of his ministry on earth. Of his death and his rising triumphant and gloriously from the grave...And I turn to the Book of Mormon, a record of God's dealings with great nations that flourished in pre-Columbian times in America, to the record of three colonies divinely led from Asia, tells of their development into nations here in America; the forces that led to their prosperity and happiness and greatness, and the causes of their deterioration and decline. This record was inscribed on metal plates by the ancient prophets and historians and translated by the young prophet Joseph Smith from metal plates by the gift and power of God."

He states, "At a certain time of my life it became necessary for me, especially since I was asked to accept a position that is unique among all the organizations of the world, to give considerable thought to this question of how God shall reveal himself to his people. There was a disposition at one time on my part to limit God as to how he should reveal his will. But I passed this point and have been able to say, If thou, oh God, art desirous of revealing thy will to us, or to me, be it far from me to say how. And so we still stand for one of the fundamental ideals of the church, and that is not only belief in God, but a sure and secure belief that God will reveal his will to us, and speak to us in his own language and in his own way."

(quotes from D&C 100:3) "Such a thought should be sobering. Too often among chosen people the knowledge of having been 'chosen' results in an attitude of smug complacency; yet nowhere in religious history has God condoned spiritual inertia. The promises of the Lord stand sure only when His people take the initiative in obedience to the commandments of Deity."

"Repentance is not a single act or a single event, or a single experience, but a lifetime process. We don't repent of everything today, and waken tomorrow morning to find that our repentance is complete, and that we are new creatures. We may be new in the sense that our allegiance has been shifted to God, and that the direction of our life has been changed. But reversing direction when we first discover that we are on the wrong road does not bring us immediately to our destination. We must often slowly and painfully retrace our steps by the way we have come, until we find the right road--the right path. Then we must not be content merely to sit down in the road. A road is to be travelled, not sat upon. Having set our feet in the strait and narrow way, we must walk that way; we must go on to perfection."
